JENING’s Thoughts after Day One of the Spy/Sniper Release!

JENING has been asked by dozens of his good friends to share his thoughts about the spy/sniper release now that it is live and in play! JENING was able to play for five hours last night shortly after the patch came out! Here are some JENING reflections!

1. The New Unlock System

As many of you know, Valve has decided to decouple Acheivements from Unlocks. JENING approves of this because that system caused many players simply to farm acheivements on acheivement servers, rewarding most those players who wanted to spend their time pointlessly grinding away!

The new system, however, JENING believes is even worse. Unlocks are seemingly random, and obtainable irrespective of what class you play (JENING has seen heavies unlock spy weapons), or whether you’re even actively playing (JENING has seen unlocks during setup periods, and hears that even spectators can acheive unlocks). There is also no guarantee that you’ll get any unlock at all–many players have reported going many hours without an unlock. JENING has read that Valve’s Robin Walker has stated that the infrequency of some unlocks is a bug. But that still does not change the frustration engendered by the randomness of the system.

JENING suggests releasing all unlocks to all players at the time the patch is released. Since neither the Achievement or the Random system awards skill, or even time played (farming acheivements takes much less time than playing the game regularly, and dozens of hours played under the Random system may yet yield nothing), JENING submits that players not be forced to go through the motions and simply have the items from the start.

2. The New Spy Unlocks

  • The Ambassador — Far stronger than it should be
JENING was very happy to discover that his first unlock was the Ambassador gun as it was JENING’s most happily anticipated unlock! JENING found it to be extremely, almost excessively, powerful. JENING found that he could go in guns blazing, from the front, uncloaked and undisguised, and take out much of the enemy team. JENING even went 50-6 during one session of Arena Lumberyard in which JENING used the Ambassador exclusively. That session was with many of JENING’s friends — not just an assortment of novices Although JENING has played over 800 hours of spy, JENING still believes that such a high kill to death ratio strongly suggests that something is amiss and that the Ambassador is too strong. On paper, the Ambassador supposedly has a slower rate of fire than the Pistol, but in practice, JENING found that this was not at all the case, and both guns fired at substantially the same rate. The Ambassador is also supposed to severely drop off in accuracy after the first shot, but JENING found that the Ambassador was consistently accurate with every shot. The Ambassador is also supposed to do 15% less damage than the Pistol, but JENING barely saw much of a damage reduction at all.   Watch YouTube Video suggesting Ambassador is broken>>.

On the other hand, the new headshot mechanic seems underpowered. JENING did not notice much of a difference in damage dealt as between headshots and regular shots. JENING strongly suspects that Valve will be issuing a subsequent patch that will operate as a severe nerf to the Ambassador. Although JENING will confess with guilt that he enjoyed very much being able to take out entire teams with just his gun, JENING believes that a nerf is needed.

  • The Cloak and Dagger — Balanced and of limited use
The Cloak and Dagger (“C/D”) drains at a seemingly faster rate than the standard Invisibility Watch (“IW”). A full sprint will give you just under 10 seconds of cloak (the IW gives you a full 10). The C/D also takes a full 20 seconds to recharge (the IW is faster, even without metal). If you walk very slowly and inch along, it is possible to move as far as you want while never dropping cloak with the C/D. But this is impractical. While there are many ways to play as spy, JENING’s preferred tactics rely heavily on swift and constant movement. JENING believes this style of play allows you to help your team more by shifting to where the action is, makes you less predictable and less susceptible to spychecking, and has a greater psychological effect on the other team (if they believe you are “everywhere”). The C/D is simply incompatible with that kind of gameplay. While there are certainly spies out there far more skilled than JENING who may be able to make great use of the C/D, JENING is not so skilled, and will not be using the C/D.
  • The Dead Ringer — Better than JENING thought
JENING has not yet unlocked the Dead Ringer (the “D/R”), but has seen it in action on several occasions. The D/R’s “fake death” is very convincing, and it includes a kill notification to the enemy, and can even trigger farena first blood! Decloaking out of the D/R is extremely loud, however, and most players will probably notice you if you try to decloak behind them with the D/R. JENING will reserve further judgment on this until JENING is able to unlock it and use it himself!

3. Other Changes To The Spy

Many changes were made to the spy’s disguises to make them even more convincing. While nice, JENING thinks the increased paranoia manifested in more spychecking will marginalize any intended benefit. Moreover, the spy’s mainstay for avoiding detection has, and will likely continue to be, cloak rather than disguise.

The spy can also now take enemy teleporters. JENING thinks this is nice, but it will probably be of limited application. Most engineer nests are already accessible through creative jumping. Still, a nice little buff, as engineers it will give engineers yet one more point of entry to guard and to spycheck.

4. The New Maps

Pipeline (Double Payload map) – Somewhat bland looking, and high potential for extended stalemates. Too linear, not enough side crevices ala Badwater. Fun and novel for now, but may become tiresome later.

Arena Sawmill - Dark, rainy theme is very aesthetically pleasing! Seemed a bit too big and decentralized at first, but played very well with 16 players. The moving sawblades are a nice touch.

Arena Nucleus - Fighting is too sparse and decentralized, as it all took place in piecemeal around the perimeter ring.

5. Jarate and the new scoreboard icon system

JENING has not unlocked Jarate. But it is awesome. JENING never thought being doused in urine could be so fun. Unrelatedly, Valve’s replacement of the scoreboard’s textual descriptions of classes with icons is confusing and was unnecessary, JENING thinks!

JENING invites your comments . . .

EDIT: VALVE HAS PATCHED THE AMBASSADOR. JENING HAS TESTED IT OUT FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. JENING APPROVES! The accuracy spread is much more severe now, and the damage also seems reduced. Firing rate seems about the same, but it is far less potent than before. However, it still seems like a promising, viable sidegrade. JENING will test it more later and invites your thoughts!

I agree with most of your thoughts. Sawmill is amazing, Pipeline gets boring fast, Nucleus is fun, but is too cramped. I have not unlocked any Spy or Sniper unlocks, but they look promising. I do not suggest trying to kill Jening or any other Spy when they wield the Ambassador, it is downright deadly.

  2. Hecosean Says:

I totally agree with everything Jenning said so far. Especially about the ammbassador. I have read some good theories on steam forums on what problem may be. Most appanently as shown on a you tube video is that you can miss widely and it still hits. So you can have wildy innacurate aim and still get hits. I think that is why it is so powerful. Its like shooting a giant box instead of a player model. On the other hand some people have hypothesized that this bug is what prevents headshots from registering properly. That is is hitting this large bounding box first and then hitting the head (Didn’t you know? The gun can shoot through multiple enemies.) So while acknowledging the headshot it hits the bounding box first and since it cant shoot the same player twice only gives the regular damage. So I imaging any fix will make it hit the player model properly making it harder to hit people which will depower most of its OP. At the same time that fix will probrably make headshots work properly restoring the balance for good aim. This is what I predict will happen. Oh yes someone told me when I used an enemy teleporter that is gave off a faint glow of my team color when coming out of the exit for a fraction of a second. So a good player will be able to tell you are a spy if you use their teleporter. I cant confirm yet as I havent it on someone else but was from a reliable friend who ran over and killed me after teleporting and he told me how he knew.

  3. Aldershot Says:

excellent thoughts as usual jening. when jening say any thing spy is OP its definitely OP. but i have to say i personally didn’t find it too op, as to me, i was being killed / killing spies, the same ratio and amount as any other day.

though i have noticed strange things with the ambass. ie: i was healing Wud on PLR and he was a spy with the ambass. we were pwning and spawn camping the opposinhg team with just me (medic), and wud (spy with ambass). we were even taking out solders and scouts as they walked out the door. Now to be fair Wud is an excellent player, i’ve played with him in the past and he is no n00b, BUT a single spy, even being healed by a medic should not be able to spawn camp as effectively as we did.

i am interested to see valve’s comming patches.

  4. Chadam Says:

Update just released, fixed Ambassador, or so they say.

  5. ZOUNDS! Says:

reading you post i realized something…if you go through an enemy teleporter does it tele frag people of the enemy team or your team. if the enemy team hilarity shall ensue from engies that place their teles in their gun nest and stand on it, i know i sometimes do.

i have played a good 6+ hours and have recieved nothing, not even a duplicate /sadface

  6. diznoid Says:

I agree with the people that think the Ambassador is doing more damage than it should. The spy did need a buff, but the Am-badass-ador is wee bit too strong.

Jening “experimented” on me exentsively with the Ambassador when he got it last night. He came up behind me once (I was sniper) and shot me in the back of the head, execution style. I feel loved.

Unfortunately, I’m one of the “bugged” people that didn’t diddly-dick after playing for 6 hours and AFK spectating for 3. Dammit!

  7. Vor: iSuck Says:

Wow after hearing about these bugged accounts I feel grateful to have 3 sandwiches! I sure wish I had some new weapons to try out though; I agree 100% with Jening that valve is making the new weapon acquirement system far too gimmicky and adds nothing to the game! If one could sit around and simply spectate and get the weapons, the weapons should just be awarded to everyone immediately!
While I believe adding this change will increase the occurrence of “class-fortress” where a single class is played because of the patch, it will mostly be people testing weapons and will still be less prevalent than people grinding on normal servers like previous patches, which was my largest concern.

  8. Soviet Nuke Says:

I can honestly say that I agree with 100% of your comments. I only wish I would have gotten that ambassador before the patch for some fun. I love the way it looks. Handcanons rock! I was playing sniper with Jening on the update day and I was no match for it. Hoping valve will respond quickly to the changes needed. Looking forward to playing with JJJJJJening!

  9. THAT AKIHA IS A PYRO Says:

Agreed on many points. Old Ambassador was overpowered and a clear upgrade. Despite the rebalance, I still think that the headshot mechanic is a silly idea, since it infringes upon the domain of snipers. While this should not necessarily bar all classes from having any sort of similarity, I hope that it will not pave way for a whole slew of flamethrowing heavies or railgun soldiers. Unique class qualities was upheld as a major feature of TF2, and I hope that lack of unlockable originality will not detract from that.

The only part I disagree with is with the Cloak and Dagger, as indefinitely cloaked spies feels like a poor mechanic that will breed ultra-careful but inefficient and poorly skilled spies. A winning team can still cap the point in arena, but having to wait the entire duration due to coward spies is rather frustrating.

Personally, the shorter but non-shimmering cloak that cannot pickup ammo to replenish charge unlock is a much better idea.

  10. zaraithe Says:

Have not tried sawmill yet, and I’ve only unlocked the Huntsman (twice). It is a nice touch to be able to light them on fire though :D Ive seen DR in action, have not noticed anything harder to kill >;) There is one thing I hope is changed though, and that is the strobing effect I get on screen when hit with Jarate, it actually makes me feel ill, kind of like the drugs toggle. Can’t wait to play with you all tho, when the drama here has died down!

  11. [A-SP]Your_Typical_Mental Says:

The new unlock system is a dreadful idea. Whereas the old system allowed for the existence of achievement servers it rewarded more determined players for their skill. As someone who takes sniper almost as seriously as Jening takes spy, I’m really dissappointed that my skill and dedication to the class accounts to nothing now when it comes to getting the new weapons.

    Would you agree, Jening?

  12. Blue Fenrir Wolf Says:

There is an odd glitch with the Ambassador. In any match with a gate (payload maps, dustbowl, etc), the Ambassador can shoot through it from any angle/position, killing enemies before the match starts. I don’t know if they patched it yet, but i have been killed, and seen enemies killed by Spys exploiting this glitch.

So, try not to stand near the gates. =)

this is a perfect example of why this random drop system is retarded. though the idea of just handing out new items on start im not totally for because i do enjoy earning equips. i think valve should of oped for a stat based item gain system much like call of duty.

  14. GHOST Says:

Dead Ringer Rules!!! It’s my favorite spy unlock. The damage reduction is ridiculous, and the recharge is fast as well. You have to play with it, to understand it. This is by far the best watch for me and most helpful while playing the game. Awesome Unlock!

  15. Blue Fenrir Wolf Says:

Jening, did you notice the Spy’s update to his backstab animation? Now, whenever you’re in range for a backstab, the spy will raise his knife, ready to strike. I guess Valve made this because people complained about their backstabs missing. So, now they have a visual cue for it.

  16. bbd Says:

hello jening :) i agree with 100% you said… and unfortunly i played for 15 hours and unlockd a natasha, a razorback and a sandman :(
i’ll try some more later to see if i unlock any of the spy unlocks… the ambassador with the broken hitboxes was really fun… when my friend unlocked it i thought he has becomed the master of the aim, but then i see that it was all a bug hahaha i hope you had enjoyed it… see you in game :)

  17. Slowpoek Says:

Finally got the Dead Ringer today… and it ended up being twice in the same ~30-minute game.

It really is something that takes getting used to, in fact you probably have to forget many of the tenets of playing Spy you’ve learned over time and switch to a significantly different mindset to use it to its fullest potential. You certainly feel “naked” when you’re first using it, unable to manually cloak, and the extremely short cloak time of about 4 or 5 seconds means that choosing the wrong path to escape, as with Spy right now, guarantees certain disaster.

Right now, people are pretty easily fooled by it, but I wonder when in a month or two from now, when more Spies have it, how common and routine after-”death” Spy checking will be.

Definitely a situational item for me. But some Spies will probably be able to master the Dead Ringer like it’s second nature.

  18. LoLAdriankat Says:

I have the Dead Ringer and I found it to be EXTREMELY powerful for backstab-happy spies. I’m very impatient and I like stabbing people, so if you’re like me, you’ll like it. I’ve been getting 3:1 KDs and even 5:1 KDs at times.

The first great thing I noticed about is that the Dead Ringer absorbs damage. A charged sniper shot will do 10 damage to a Dead Ringer spy. You can sacrifice yourself for stickies and crit rockets. You can also uncloak just as you take damage and then your Dead Ringer will fully charge just as you uncloak, allowing you to bring up your Dead Ringer to absorb more damage. This technique is also useful for playing mindgames on your future backstab victims.

The Dead Ringer is a great tool for players who like to be in the thick of the battle. A Dead Ringer spy does not uncloak when he takes damage, instead he stays completely invisible as he runs through the battlefield. I like to run towards the enemy team with it, trying to dodge as much fire as I can so I cloak later and waste less charge. I will eventually take damage and cloak, then I will hide somewhere behind the enemy. While hiding, I wait for my Dead Ringer to charge up, then I run towards their backs with my Dead Ringer up just in case someone suspects and attacks me (If someone does, I just repeat the hiding step), then I backstab as much people as I can before I pull out my Dead Ringer and go back into hiding mode. I get a lot more backstabs then I do with the regular cloak and Cloak and Dagger.

Oh, and the Dead Ringer puts out the flames. Awesome.

  19. LoLAdriankat Says:

Oh, and the Dead Ringer does allow the spy to blend in with a disguise because he gets a chance to escape now.

[...] Cloak and Dagger JENING previously blogged about his thoughts on the Cloak and Dagger. JENING stands by those [...]

  21. Rychan WR3 Says:

I think the cloak and dagger is a useful tool for new spies, purely from the possible permanent invisbility available from using it. It certainly gives me more of a chance to backstab unnoticed. Although, I never have gotten the hang of the spy class, this watch makes me try it out a lot more often to infiltrate bases with constant invisiblity.

  22. SkullMuffinz Says:

I can see why you dislike the Cloak and Dagger, mentioning the swift/constant movements, but If one is using the C&D, one doesn’t necessarilly have to inch along slowly by tapping the movement keys every so often, as crouching increases the recharge speed.

While doing this will significantly slow a spy down, you may move at a constant rate and stay cloaked near indefinitely.

As a suggestion, if Jening did not know about the crouching feature of the C&D, you may want to try that out and see if it benefits you in anyway or not.

And if you already knew about the crouching effect of the C&D, sorry for repeating information you already knew.
